Many companies use videos on YouTube to help spread their advertisements and connect with their customers. Chipotle (they make burritos and tacos...located in front of Cub Foods), published this video to help spread their views about factory farming. Chipotle tries to only use free-range and organic meat products in their food, which is a really unique practice among chain restaurants (or any restaurants for that matter).

Willie Nelson did a cover of Coldplay's song "The Scientist" for this video. You can view the video on the Tech Drive, called "Chipotle Cute Piggy." You can also check out Chipotle's really cool website here.

Even though I'm still happy I'm vegetarian I do hope more restaurants will follow Chipotle's example!

This is the Mailer Demon. You may have receved an email from him, only he spells it Mailer D-a-e-mon. A daemon, in technology terms, is a process that runs in the background. When an email doesn't send properly the Mailer Daemon sends you a message to let you know it didn't work. He's actually much nicer than he looks, because he tells you exactly why your message didn't go through (usually it's because you spelled the email address wrong).

If you get a message from this little creature DO NOT delete it.  His messages are a little hard to read, but with practice you'll figure out what he's trying to say. Ask a teacher to help you figure out which email didn't get sent, so you can try sending it again.

Special thanks to Mrs. Geigner's little brother Chris, a graphic arts student at I.S.U., for showing us what the Mailer Daemon looks like :)

I have emailed all students a username and password for your QuizStar account. This is an online quiz program we will be using this year. PLEASE KEEP THIS EMAIL. You can create a new folder to put it in or you can put it in your starred items folder. Please ask Mrs. Geigner if you need help.

If you did not get an email with your username and password please email me and let me know!

Hurricane Irene is set to debut this weekend on the east coast. You can track the hurricane at http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at201109.html or http://www.weather.com/weather/hurricanecentral/article/tropical-depression-nine-storm-hurricane-irene_2011-08-20.

Have you ever been through a Hurricane? Mrs. Geigner has! You can learn more about being prepared for a Hurricane at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/HAW2/english/disaster_prevention.shtml.

Thanks to Mr. Dunlap for sharing this great article about students who can achieve great innovation when they work hard. Check out the article at: http://www.npr.org/2011/08/23/139854129/young-entrepreneur-has-a-better-idea-now-what

Watch the short (really short...only 4 seconds!) video at: http://vimeo.com/22935739 (also on the Tech Drive) that shows how everyone has obstacles to achieving goals. Sometimes what you want can be right in front of you but you have to work to get it. Our school is all about trying to help people reach their goals!

The logo in the top corner of the email program is kind of boring. I'm looking for students to design a new logo! Anyone can do this either on the computer OR you can draw something on paper and we can scan it in. Submissions will be taken all year. Your picture must be appropriate and must have the words HJSHS Email included somewhere in the picture.

Students are getting new emails this week. We are using Gaggle.net as our filtered email service. Please remember that at this time students are only able to email staff in the school, not other students. School email is filtered and monitored. Students may use their Gaggle email at home, but teachers will not receive the message until the next school day.

This week high school students are working on the PowerPoints for the career fair. Here are some helpful hints to remember to keep your PowerPoint PROFESSIONAL.
  • Limit your fonts to 1 or 2 fonts.
  • Keep fonts appropriate (a child-like font would be fine for a daycare but not a mechanic).
  • Have an instructor proof-read your presentation; make necessary corrections.
  • Pictures as backgrounds to the slide can be nice, but are often overused and make the words hard to read. If you must use a picture as a background consider fading the picture or coloring the background of the text.
  • Sound can be helpful but should make sense and be choosen in the appropriate spot.
  • Keep colors consistent through out the entire presentation. It may be a good idea to choose colors that represent the business you visited.
